Tapedeck (Zep) is a tribute to Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin. It came about
when a friend of mine gave me a cello bow. For the longest time, I could
get nothing out of it. Then, inspired by the Zeppelin DVD, I picked it up
again and the sounds began
to come. Meanwhile, Norm was experimenting with his cassette decks. His
source tape was one of our old jams with a drummer who was out of time. On the other
side was a Sunday morning radio preacher, spreading fear and salvation.
Gradually, we began to see that the two would fit together.
This is take 14, recorded in the basement of Object Technology International.
There is a shimmer on the bow that might be the result of the concrete walls,
who knows? When we play it live, Tapedeck (Zep) is much longer and features
many different named sections, such as "Zardoz" and "Propeller Sermon".
Norm will sometimes dial in the CBC and manipuate what he finds there.
I've had close minded people frown when I pull out the bow. My view
is this: Because Jimi Hendrix used a wah pedal, should nobody else use
one? It's the same with Jimmy Page and the bow.
